Jared Spool: "The Brave New World: Usability Challenges of Web 2.0"

En weer kan alles! De opkomst van social networks, API's, mashups, RSS,
aggregators en folksonomies beloven een wereld waar de informatie en
diensten die we altijd al wilden hebben rechtstreeks in onze browser worden
opgediend.

Maar... het waarmaken van die belofte is makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan. Het
uitwerken van een goed concept tot een uitstekende user experience blijkt
lastiger dan menigeen dacht. Wat in een prototype werkt blijkt een ander
verhaal als het in productie wordt genomen. Designers gaan ook makkelijk te
ver met het inzetten van de nieuwe technologieen als ze zich niet leren
beheersen.

In een onderhoudende en informatieve presentatie zal Jared voorbeelden laten
zien van de uitdagingen op het gebied van usability die we zullen tegenkomen
nu het web weer verandert. Hij zal spreken over "The Long Tail", de neiging
van bedrijven om mee te doen met mashups, en over hoe basistechnieken zoals
usability tests en gebruikersonderzoek veranderen bij het ontwerpen voor
social networks.

Als je Jared ooit over usability hebt horen spreken, weet je dat hij waarschijnlijk de meest effectieve, belezen spreker is over het onderwerp die je vandaag de dag kunt vinden. Wat je waarschijnlijk niet weet is dat hij het research beleid bij User Interface Engineering (UIE) heeft bepaald en de organisatie heeft uitgebouwd tot de grootste research organisatie in zijn soort. Hij werkt al in het vakgebied van usability en design sinds 1978, voordat de term "usability" ook maar gekoppeld was aan computers.

Jared werkt dagelijk met zijn research teams, helpt klanten met het oplossen van hun ontwerpproblemen, legt aan journalisten en analisten uit wat de stand van zaken op design gebied is en is een gewaardeerd spreker op meer dan 20 conferenties per jaar. Hij is bovendien chair en keynote speaker van UIE's jaarlijkse User Interface Conference, staflid van het Gordon Institute van de Tufts universiteit en het lukt hem ook nog om regelmatig wat te schrijven, onder andere op het blog

Jesse James Garrett: "The Frontiers of User Experience"

With the rise of user-centered design, user experience issues such as information architecture and interaction design have become pivotal components of any software development strategy. But now, new tools and techniques are starting to emerge that will change the way we approach crafting applications to respond to user needs and user behavior. In this presentation, Jesse James Garrett offers some perspectives on the changes ahead of us, and considers potential sources for new ideas and inspiration for the future of user experience.

About Jesse James Garrett

Jesse James Garrett is Director of User Experience Strategy and co- founder of Adaptive Path, a user experience firm based in San Francisco. He is the author of The Elements of User Experience and an internationally recognized leader in the field who has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Business Week. His work has been published in more than a dozen languages and he is a frequent keynote speaker and writer on user experience strategy.

Steven Pemberton (W3C): "Web 4.0: now's the time to plan!"

The success of the Web has turned the browser into a central application area for the user, and you can spend most of your day working with applications in the browser, reading mail, shopping, searching your own diskdrive. Minds are now focussing on delivering applications via the web, not least because it eliminates the problems involved with versioning: everyone always has the most recent version of your application. Since Web-based applications have benefits for both user and provider, we can only expect this to be a growth area.

However, the approaches used for these applications don't address some fundamental needs for the web, such as accessibility and device independence. And furthermore the approach comes at a cost. Google Maps, to take an example, is of the order of 200K of Javascript code. Such applications are only writable by programming experts, and producing an application is not possible by the sort of people who often produce web pages for their own use.

This talk discusses the requirements for Web Applications, and the underpinnings necessary to make Web Applications follow in the same spirit that engendered the Web in the first place.

About Steven Pemberton

Steven Pemberton is a senior researcher at the CWI, Amsterdam, the Dutch national research institute for mathematics and computer science. He has been involved with the Web from the beginning, organising two workshops at the first WWW conference in 1994, and chairing the first Style Sheets Workshop in 1995. He is chair of the World Wide Web Consortium's HTML and Forms Working Groups, and co-author of amongst others HTML, CSS, XHTML and XForms. He is also the former editor-in-chief of SIGCHI Bulletin and ACM/interactions and one of the fouders of SIGCHI.NL.

Dagvoorzitter: Jeroen van Erp

Jeroen van Erp studeerde in 1988 af aan de TU in Delft als Industrieel Ontwerper. Hij begon als free-lance ontwerper en deed opdrachten voor onder andere ING Bank en de PTT. In 1992 was hij 1 van de mede-oprichters van Fabrique, een multidisciplinair ontwerpbureau. In 1994 richtte hij Fabrique nieuwe media op. In de jaren daarna werd er gewerkt aan projecten voor zowel grote klanten als Fiat en Shell, als klanten in de entertainmentindustrie.

Op dit moment is Fabrique een veelzijdig ontwerpbureau dat zich richt op verschillende design disciplines, zoals grafisch, industrieel, ruimtelijk en nieuwe media. Fabrique werkt met ruim 70 medewerkers voor een breed scala aan klanten, denkt mee over strategie en merk en gebruikt dit als uitgangspunt om tot efficiënte oplossingen te komen. Als art director was Jeroen betrokken bij projecten voor onder andere Albert Heijn en de ANWB en werkte hij onlangs aan een IPTV modem voor KPN en de nieuwe website voor het Rijksmuseum.
